Welcome Niels Nkounkou!
OGC Nice is delighted to announce the arrival of Niels Nkounkou. The 25-year-old left-back joins Le Gym on loan with a purchase option from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Le Gym has a new face to reinforce the left side. At 25, Niels Nkounkou has already amassed a lot of European experience. Quick, powerful and attack-minded, the 1.80m tall left-footer can play as a classic left-back or as a wing-back.
Born in Pontoise in the Paris region, Niels left France aged 19 to join Everton. After making his debut in England, he continued his career at Standard Liege and then Cardiff before returning to France with Saint-Etienne in the 2022-23 season.
He quickly established himself as one of the top players in Ligue 2, and his qualities earned him a place in the UNFP Team of the Season.

In Nice, he’ll reunite with a familiar face. “I spoke a lot to Elye (Wahi), who is a very good friend. He said a lot of good things about the club, the city and the fans. Now, I’m really looking forward to getting started, to meet the squad and give everything on the pitch. I hope to be able to help the team and enjoy a good season.”

Maurice Cohen, OGC Nice President: “We’re delighted to welcome Niels. He already has a lot of experience having played in several European leagues. He showed his desire to join Le Gym and we’re delighted he’s with us now. Welcome!”

Roger Ricort, OGC Nice Sporting Director: “Niels corresponds to the profile we had been looking for. He’s a very athletic left-footer with a great engine. He has all the qualities of a modern full-back. He’s able to defend well but with real attacking qualities, can cross well and can get up and down the pitch. In spite of being just 25 years old, he’s already played in England, Belgium, Germany and Italy. He’s going to contribute his qualities and his experience.”
