Galtier: "We went missing"

Check out Christophe Galtier's reaction after Le Gym's defeat at Troyes (1-0).

Coach, there were too many things missing in order to hope for better today…
We didn't bring anything to the table. The start of the match was catastrophic, but that's only the start: that whole of the match was catastrophic. When you are as bad as that for 93 or 94 minutes, everybody has their share of the blame and myself as the coach, am first in line. I need to reflect on what happened during the 15 days of the international break and how we presented ourselves for this match. Troyes more than deserved their victory, through the way they played and what they brought to the game, in terms of commitment and effort. They imposed their rhythm when it should have been us imposing our rhythm on the match. We were dominated throughout. We lacked character, commitment. You could feel that in the game. We had almost nothing, apart from in the 60th until the 70th minute when a misunderstanding. could have led to a goal. It's hugely disappointing and it poses real questions on the way in which I and we, approached the match. Because to have been absent for the whole of the match, it's because several things haven't been properly understood.

Were you surprised by the fact that Troyes got right up at you in the first quarter of an hour?
No. I watched their matches against Monaco and Nantes. Against Lyon, it was a different approach. We knew that it would be like that. They were looking for their first home win. They stood up and were counted. We went missing.

Gouiri couldn't have played more?
Yes, he could have, maybe 45 minutes. I thought about maybe making the change quickly at the break. I waited to see if there was going to be a reaction or some improvement. In the end, that never came.

The international break took the wind out of your sails?
I don't know if it's the international break or whether you need to say: "Look, we are going to Lorient, we are going to Troyes". It's different from Marseille, Paris, Lyon, Monaco or others. If the players say that they are ambitious, we need to show something different, complete investment, no matter who we are playing and no matter at what time we play. We need to at least react. We didn't even do it today. That's what I expect of my team. We can struggle, but then react. In the match today, we had nothing. It's frustrating, but it must allow us to have a real think about the starting 11.

Have you fallen into a sort of comfort zone?
Troyes brought us out of that comfort zone. That's when we see, away from the result, the capacity of the squad to react and not reproduce this kind of performance. Aside from the result, there is the way that we approached the match, and what happened in the match. Of course, when things are going well, when people are talking a lot about you, it can send you to sleep and lose a little something, or make you too calm. At the top level, you can never be chilled. You always need to be alert, always excited. Having that desire to do better than your opponents. We don't ask them to play football, but to be better than a team. Today, we weren't better than the opposition. Far from it.
