Interview

Vieira: “We had done the hard part…”

At his press conference, Patrick Vieira regretted the fact that his side had not managed to take the game to extra time against OL after Adam Ounas’ equaliser.

Patrick, how are you feeling after your side’s elimination from the competition?
It’s disappointing because we had done the hard part in getting back on level terms. In terms of the effort the lads put in, we deserved at least to take the game to extra time. The penalty hurt us a lot.

On balance, is the result deserved?
It was very tough for us in the first half. In defence, we struggled. In the second half, we had chances but unfortunately, our lack of agression in the box didn’t allow us to convert them earlier in the game.

Was it a penalty for you?
There is no discussion to be had. It’s cruel for Dante. He is en exemplary player who I have relied upon since I have been here. It doesn’t cast into doubt what he brings us in the dressing room and on the pitch. Before the foul, we lost a silly ball in midfield when we should have gone longer, we were maybe still caught up in the euphoria of the equaliser…

Do you not get the feeling that your side fell back into their bad habits in terms of their intensity?
You need to give Lyon a lot of credit as they surprised us and caused us lots of issues with their system. We managed to improve in the second half but the opposition were well organised with lots of individual qualities. It was tough but we were expecting it. The players did what they could, they gave their all in the second half. In terms of concentration and the desire to do well, I can’t fault them. But yes, we made mistakes in our positioning and accuracy in the final 30 metres of the pitch.

How will you manage the “return fixture” in three days?
We will analyse this evening’s match tactically and see what we can change, improve. We will think about our tactical approach to the game, and see if we keep the same system or not.

What about Wylan Cyprien’s injury?
We will wait 24/48 hours to find out exactly what’s wrong. It’s a pain in his thigh.
