The Gym mourns Charly Loubet

OGC Nice was extremely sad to learn of the death of Charly Loubet. The extraordinary former attacking midfielder has left us at the age of 77.

He was a local boy and he became a legend at the Gym. He was an incredible dribbler, a crazy player, the formidable Charly passed away this Monday. He leaves behind the memory of a man as magnificent as the player was. Born in Grasse, he made his name in Cannes, and at the age of 16 he started playing professionally with the Dragons, then with the Stade Français, and joined OGC Nice in the winter of 1963.

There he started a beautiful love affair which lasted until 1975, with a short break of two seasons in Marseille from 1969 to 1971.

A prominent member of a generation of titans that notably toppled Barça at Le Ray in 1973 (3-0), Charly played 343 games and scored 93 goals in the red and black shirt. 23 of his 36 caps for the French national team were as a Nice player, another record.

"Charly was a great man, as well as an extraordinary player. He made a whole generation of fans dream. His death saddens us all. We are thinking of his family and friends", said President Rivère.

A tribute will be paid to him during the next match at the Allianz Riviera, on 10 February against Ajaccio.
