Another day another stat
Le Gym finish as Ligue 1’s joint-best defence
Following an epic 3-2 victory away to Stade de Reims on the final day of the season, OGC Nice wrapped up their 2021-22 league campaign in fifth place. Although Christophe Galtier’s squad spent the majority of the year as the top flight’s best defence – they only let in their first goals of the season on Matchday 6, in a 2-2 draw with Monaco – the two goals conceded at the Stade Auguste Delaune mean that they must share the title of “best defence” with PSG. Just like the French champions, Les Aiglons conceded 36 goals in 38 games.
36 goals conceded in a league season matches the total of the class of 2016-17, who finished in third place that year.
Nice have only done better in this respect on four occasions in the 21st century: 2002-03 (31 goals conceded), 2005-06 (also 31 goals conceded), 2007-08 (30 goals conceded, a record since the club’s return to the top flight) and 2018-19 (35 goals conceded).
