2020/21

OGC Nice in Europe if...

In addition to the the team's final placing, which is an improvement on the last two seasons (8th and 7th), there is also the question of European qualification for the 2020/21 season. But despite finishing fifth, Le Gym isn't in the Europa League just yet.

In France, fourth place in Ligue 1 takes you into the competition's group stage. The Coupe de France winner joins them while the Coupe de la Ligue victor heads into the second qualifying round, and has to play six matches to reach the group stage.

If the cup winners have already qualified for European competition through the league, then the places go to the sides having finshed fifth and then sixth in L1.

So, we'll have to wait to see if the finals of these competitions are played and — if they are — who wins them.

THE POSSIBLE SCENARIOS

Scenario 1: If Paris Saint-Germain win both domestic cup competitions, Nice will be qualified for the Europa League group stage with Reims going into the second qualifying round (Q2).

Scenario 2: Should PSG win 'only' the Coupe de France, Nice go into the group stage, and Lyon will be in Q2 as Coupe de la Ligue winners. Reims will miss out.

Scenario 3: If PSG win 'only' the Coupe de la Ligue, Saint-Etienne will go into the group stage as Coupe de France winners, Nice into Q2, and Reims miss out.

Scenario 4: If PSG win neither of the cups, Saint-Etienne will go into the group stage as Coupe de France winners, Lyon will be in Q2 as Coupe de la Ligue winners. Nice and Reims will both miss out.

Scenario 5: If only the Coupe de France final can be played, OGC Nice will be in the Europa League next season, but will have to await the outcome of the game: a PSG win takes OGCN into the group stage, a Saint-Etienne victory means Q2 for Les Aiglons.

Scenario 6: If only the Coupe de la Ligue final can be played, OGC Nice will be certain of a group stage place. If PSG win, Reims will be in Q2; if Lyon triumph, they'll go into Q2 instead.

Scenario 7: If neither of the finals can be played, Nice (group stage) and Reims (Q2) will play in next season's Europa League.
