Aiglon of the match

Gouiri polls 94%

His double strike on his debut for Le Gym secured a 2-1 win over Lens, and earned Amine Gouiri the overwhelming number of votes as your Crédit Agricole Aiglon of the Match.

"It was my first L1 start, I really wanted to begin well." He certainly did that. After arriving from Lyon at the start of July, Amine Gouiri hit the ground running in a red-and-black shirt.

TWO GEMS

During Sunday's opening league game of the season, the Rouge-et-Noir's number 11 took centre stage. Just 11 minutes in, Lens were in front, but Gouiri played a one-two with Hassane Kamara and brilliantly curled home the equaliser soon after (24'). "I was positioned on the left, so I knew I'd have those sorts of opportunities," he explained.

It was the same story in the second period. After Pierre Lees-Melou won the ball back high up the pitch, he played a pass to Gouiri on the left. He moved inside before — this time — bending a low shot into the net (75'). Used to playing through the middle, Gouiri explained it wasn't the first time he'd been employed in a wider role. "I played there when I was younger, so I got back into the swing of things, and it went for me today."

In competition with Dante, Andy Pelmard and Walter Benitez in the vote, Gouiri swept to victory in the poll just as stylishly as he had earned his side all three points.

The stat

Gouiri became the youngest Nice player to score twice in his first L1 game in the last 70 seasons, and the first of any age since Mario Balotelli on 11 September, 2016.
