Homage

Maradona: A plethora of homages

Diego Armando Maradona's death on Wednesday November 25 left the football world in mourning. While a homage was held to him at this week's European games, further homages will be paid this weekend in domestic leagues, remembering the former midfielder.

Football lost one of its greatest representatives, and Argentina the biggest figure in its sport. After the Europa League game on Thursday, Walter Benitez, born in General José de San Martin in the north of the country, commented on the death of his compatriot: "Diego was an idol for me and all Argentinians. He gave us a lot, we saw him play and he was known by everyone. When I learned of his death I was of course sad, we weren't expecting that."

Touched by the death of the 1986 world champion, the Gym goalkeeper respected the minute's silence along with all the other players ahead of the match against Slavia Prague on Thursday at the Allianz Riviera (1-3). The same took place at all European matches this week.

This weekend, as Ligue 1 returns (the Gym host Dijon on Sunday at 17:00 CET), thoughts will again turn to "El Pibe de Oro". For Round 12 of the league season, the Ligue de Football Professionnel has announced its modifying the traditional pre-match protocol for another homage to Diego Maradona.
