Strasbourg 0-2 Nice

Le Gym keep going at Strasbourg

One week after the victory over Lens (2-1), Le Gym were on the road for the first time this season on Saturday in Strasbourg. Against Racing, Les Aiglons secured a second consecutive victory thanks to a brace from Kasper Dolberg (0-2).

Rhythm, effort, seriousness and cohesion: Le Gym quickly showed that they were at the races in Strasbourg. "In progress", as Coach Vieira described after the encounter, "even though there is still work to be done in order to be more dangerous", Les Aiglons left Les Alsaciens with very little chance, and the home side didn’t record a shot on target over the 90 minutes.

The visitors were disciplined and built upon a very calm Benitez between the sticks, and a precious Schneiderlin playing through the middle to ensure that they looked very compact throughout the match. Something that allowed Les Aiglons to play without fear for the large part of the game.

Although Le Gym dominated possession, they didn’t create that many chances. But like they did against Lens, six days earlier, they made the most of defensive errors, and the only difference this weekend, was that it was Dolberg who got the brace, and not Gouiri.

In his own unique style, solid and precise, the Danish international showed his cool-headedness on two occasions. Two chances that earned the 3 points. The first just before the break, as some good pressing paid off for Sylvestre – who was awarded a start on his 21st birthday - when he won a penalty for his side after Koné brought him down in the box. A penalty that the number 9 converted without even an ounce of nerves.

The second came after the break and from a rapid move. After defending well on his wing, Gouiri broke through the middle and looked for Dolberg and, with the assistance of Sissoko’s deflection, he found him. The Dane found himself through one-on-one with the keeper, and he waited for Kawashima to commit before deftly chipping the ball over him.

Before the second goal, Racing had pushed haphazardly, but the goal came to extinguish even the slightest of flames that may have been burning for the home side.

With a two-goal lead, Les Aiglons controlled the rest of the encounter. Patrick Vieira sent on Rony Lopes and Alexis Trouillet, who made their first appearances for Le Gym in L1, and Dan Ndoye came on for the final couple of minutes.

After a strong team performance, during which every member of the team played an important role, Les Azuréens picked up their second consecutive L1 win. A victory that takes them to the top of the table while waiting for the other matches from Matchday 2.

It’s now time for the international break, before Les Aiglons return to action on 12 September at Montpellier.
