Bordeaux 1-1 Nice

A great fightback by les Aiglons

Trailing at half-time, Les Aiglons showed great spirit to come back and earn a deserved point from Bordeaux (1-1). Le Gym made it five away games in a row without defeat and climbed to eighth in the standings.

Too cautious and handicapped by technical mistakes, it was a tough opening for Nice in the Gironde. Trailing to a counter-attack goal by De Preville, Nice did not give up, gradually taking control of the match and dominating large periods of the match before equalising through Ounas.

It was a new-look OGC Nice that took to the pitch at Matmut Atlantique. Riza Durmisi and Moussa Wagué both appearing in the starting XI in the league for the first time.

Bordeaux had the better of the opening exchanges. Les Aiglons struggled with the hosts’ pressing and the high positioning.

Paradoxically, it was once the Rouge et Noir had finally settled into the game and were pressing Costil’s goal, that they were punished by the home side.

Basic won back possession deep in his own half and led a devastating counterattack. The Croatian midfielders beating several Nice players before releasing De Preville in behind. The Bordeaux striker rounded the advancing Benitez and passed the ball into the empty net (1-0, 21').

The opening goal saw Paulo Sousa's men sit deeper and allow Nice the ball. Against a more aggressive Bordeaux, Nice struggled to apply constant pressure on the home side’s rear guard, before finishing the first half with a flourish. Claude-Maurice couldn’t hit the target from Ounas’ cross (37'). The former Lorient man then forced Costil into a good save from a tight angle after a solo raid down the left (43'). From the resulting corner, Ounas hit the crossbar.

In between, Pardo forced a save from Benitez after a dangerous turn over (38').

ACM, again, created an opening in the Bordeaux midfield just before the hour mark, passing to Wagué on the right wing. The Senegalese full-back sent a good cross into the heart of the area for Adam Ounas. The ex-Bordelais made a superb run and equalised with an acrobatic volley with his back to goal (1-1, 57'). Les Aiglons continued to enjoy more of the ball and were looking the more likely scorers until the final 15 minutes.

In the 75th minute, it took a brilliant save from Benitez and then a little bit of luck for Bordeaux to not regain the lead. The Argentinian goalkeeper intercepted Maja at close range before his post came to rescue to deny a De Preville header. Although Paulo Sousa's side finished the game on top and had a couple of good chances, it finished, as it did in the first meeting this season, 1-1.
