The match, his choices, the league table… the Coach’s analysis

At the same time as delivering his analysis on a victory that “provides confidence” for his troops, Patrick Vieira also explained his choices to the press, gave his view on Les Aiglons’ current league standing (2nd) and spoke of the performances of several of his players against Dijon.

The match

It was a difficult match, but in terms of our play, we showed lots of interesting things. It’s particularly defensively that we can see that there is a lot of work to be done as a team. We are a relatively young side and we showed that we lack experience and maturity in defence. Walter was exceptional in the key moments of the match. We conceded a few too many chances, which can leave a slightly bitter taste to the victory. But on the whole, the team showed lots of good things.

The starting line-up

There were certain choices based on what I saw during the week in training. I started with a side to keep possession of the ball and to cause problems for Dijon. I also had in mind the fact that we play again quickly at Monaco (on Tuesday). Players who didn’t start tonight could be starters on Tuesday.

The league table

It’s better to be at the top than at the bottom (laughs). The most important thing is to take the points, that gives you confidence in your work. What’s interesting is to see all of the areas that we still need to improve. We have done some very good things, but we still have a lot of waste in the final pass, we were too selfish at times. It’s the same in defence where there are things to correct. Sitting provisionally in second position means that my players are working very well, they are rewarded for their efforts. Our pre-season was very complicated in terms of results, but their determination was there. Today, we are managing our weak periods of games a lot better. With the results that we pick up, we of course gain in confidence, the new players are beginning to get their bearings. Adam and Kasper bring their experience of the top level.

Dolberg’s first goal

It’s good that he scored. Strikers need to score to gain in confidence. This goal will do him some good, with Adam (Ounas) involved in the move too.

Nsoki and Claude-Maurice’s first outings at home

I thought that Stanley was very good. He showed lots of personality. He is comfortable technically, he is powerful. It was his first home match, not everything was perfect but I am very satisfied with his performance.

Alexis had a problem with his knee a few weeks back, we need to be careful. He came back well. He is one of the players who could start on Tuesday.

The derby on Tuesday?

Monaco aren’t where they should be in the league (19th after the draw at Reims 0-0). They are going through a difficult period, our objective will be to try to keep the ball there, to play our game, to create chances and to score goals. We know that it won’t be an easy game.
