Lyon, a huge challenge

After Lille, Patrick Vieira’s side will face another in-form side in the league. On the final step of the Ligue 1 podium, the Gones travel to the Allianz (on Sunday at 9pm) to face a Nice side that beat them in the first encounter between the sides this season (0-1).

That first encounter, in some ways kicked off the Gym’s season (Week 4). At the end of all the suspense and thanks to a highly impressive Walter Benitez between the sticks, the Aiglons held on to win by the smallest of margins at the Groupama Stadium (0-1).

Since then, Lyon have been pressing on at a rate of knots - only losing on two occasions in the 19 league matches that have followed (at Paris, 5-0, and against Rennes 0-2). Memphis and his teammates are maintaining their status as a major player in the division. Their recent 2-1 victory over the league leaders is an example of this just last weekend. As they prepare to travel to the Côte d’Azur, Lyon come in off the back of a three match winning streak, including two wins away from home (against Amiens and Saint-Etienne).

Five players with more than five goals

With the third best attack in Ligue 1 with 38 goals scored, the Lyonnais are able to rely on an effective attacking force, playing with a system that allows them to bombard their opponent’s goal. Among others, Dembélé (7), Fékir (7), Traoré (6), Aouar (6) and Depay (5) have all scored  at least five goals each this season.

A good yield that has allowed them to compensate for a leaky defence (ninth best in the league). But there once again, OL seem to have found some form of stability, with only two goals being conceded in their last three league games.

The Aiglons are also solid at home

The Gym have won two of their last three home matches against Lyon. At home, where they haven’t lost since 21 October 2018 with the visit of Olympique de Marseille (0-1), the Aiglons will try to erase memories of their painful encounter last year (0-5), against a side that will be playing its third game in just seven days.
