Vieira: “We didn’t steal the three points”

In his press conference, Patrick Vieira was pleased with the spirit that his side showed when needed, which for the coach, was more important than the result itself.

Coach, what did you make of the match today?
We really suffered in the last twenty minutes. We were able to stay together and we defended very well. On the whole, I think that we didn’t steal the three points. We made quite a lot of mistakes technically, but our spirit was good. We tried to play, we respected what we put in place. We created chances, we could have scored before, but we lacked some luck. We needed to remain positive and I think that this will get better and better in terms of confidence.

It’s your fourth win of the season, the third away from home. How do you explain that?
I think that away from home, we are a bit more focussed on the defensive aspects, we are more rigourous. When you see the performances of Allan (Saint-Maximin) and Mario (Balotelli) defensively, they worked so hard. That’s what we need to find when we play at home. We will continue to work, this team can still improve.

This win allows you to get into the top half of the table...
We can go to the good or the bad side of the table from one match to the next given how tight the league is. For me, the important thing is the way that we play and the football that we produce. If we continue to play, if we create chances, of course we will have more chances to win matches and to climb up the league. Today, I am more focussed on what we were able to produce, rather than the points.

Do you think that this goal will allow Wylan Cyprien to really get going this season?
I am not concerned about Wylan. Because I see him work every day. His first half against Marseille, his performance today, it’s getting better and better. We need to be patient with him, he continues to work and is a very important player for us.

Another remarkable performance this evening, Christophe Jallet in a new position filled in for the injured Christophe Hérelle...
He was there when needed. It’s his intelligence that allows him to play across the pitch. He is a reliable player. He showed that when you are intelligent, you can adapt to play anywhere. He has always been there for us, it’s important to have a player like him in the squad.

This evening, your side showed that it is able to suffer in a match…
It’s important, particularly at the moment. At the end of the match, we suffered a lot, it was very difficult. We regrouped and accepted the physical game being brought to us by Bordeaux. We were really solid, to win games, we will need to be like we were tonight.
