Galtier: "The foul that wasn't given was a huge turning point"

Christophe Galtier spoke to the press following OGC Nice's defeat at OM.

How would you analyse this match?

We were too timid in the first half. We were under quite a bit of pressure from Marseille. We couldn't manage to get ourselves going, or it wasn't enough, even though Marseille didn't have huge chances in their strongest moments, whereas, despite a poor half, we had a good chance, with a good cross from Melvin Bard  and a volley that just missed the target. We had a poor first half and there was the penalty for OM, that was correctly awarded, which came at the worst possible moment. It was due to some good link-up play on their right. That's where we could feel Dante's absence. Not from Todibo's challenge. But if Dante was playing, I don't think the move would have come about. We were then trailing, I am not saying deservedly, but we trailed at the break. The second half was better with a lot more forward play. We played a lot higher up the pitch. We had some great chances, a great one-on-one between Andy Delort and Pau Lopez and Gouiri's strike when the goalkeeper seemed to be beaten. And then there was that moment in the match, the foul that wasn't given on Andy Delort. Of course it was a huge turning point. The team was taking as many risks as possible, there were moves that we managed quite well. We can have regrets. An equaliser at that moment would have been deserved.

Have you asked for explanations from the referee?
No. I had asked for an explanation from the officials last week for Montpellier's penalty which had the whole of France laughing. A red card that was upheld, which explains Dante's absence this evening. This evening, I didn't ask the referee. I have a suspended ban, so it was better that I didn't go into the referee's dressing room.

How can a forward who has the beating of the defender for this ball want to simulate something or fall to the floor when he is in the better position for the excellent ball in from Justin Kluivert?

The Marseille penalty was given quickly and rightly so, but for this foul, even if he doesn't blow the whistle, of course it has been checked… We often say it's human error, but this evening there were several human errors at that moment. I am entirely convinced of it.

The unfavourable decisions are stacking up…
There have been lots of turning points that have gone against us in recent weeks. But I don't want to become paranoid. We were in a stadium with 64,000 fans and an incredible atmosphere. I guess that if there had been the same foul on Milik at that moment of the match, there would have been a penalty and we wouldn't even had checked it on the screen. That's the way it is.

How is the squad feeling going into a two week break and the final sprint of the season?
It's very difficult to answer that. Some players will be rested, lots will be travelling to go and play. We will need to get focused again. We have a match against Rennes, who are currently the in-form side in the league. It will also be an important match in order to remain close to the teams battling for Europe. I hope that my players will head off on international duty and come back in shape. There is this first match after the international break. Then there is a run of matches, with a final at the end of it.
But coming back to this evening, we were a bit naive, a bit innocent. We are too kind. We were punished but it's also about learning. In big matches like this one, we lack a bit of experience and character. In this kind of environment, you need to have a bit more personality. I thought that we we really lacked that in the first half.

Do you feel that the three points that Marseille have taken can be a psychological advantage that could make a difference in the final matches of the season?
It's still too soon. The fixture lists are still full. Marseille also have European football. There's not just Marseille, there are other teams. Rennes are currently the best team but there is also Monaco who beat Paris. You've got Lens who are there, there's Strasbourg and you can't rule out Lyon. There will be a huge battle. We have a fixture list that will take us to Monaco, we host Rennes, we need to go to Lens. Then we will play against teams battling for survival. But from what I remember, our competition also have pretty busy schedules.
