Favre: 'We struggled to defend well collectively'

In his post-match press conference, Lucien Favre lamented the lack of compactness that saw his side allow Bordeaux too much space.

Coach, your team was pretty generous in defence tonight...
We didn't defend well. It wasn't just our defenders though; the whole team were below par in that respect. We weren't compact enough and we weren't good enough at winning back possession either. They cut us to ribbons way too easily. We played well for the last 25 minutes. Before that, we struggled to defend well collectively. Defending is a team job, and we had too much space between our lines. We need to work on that - it's one of the most basic basics.

Was your side struggling physically after an intense match in Paris?
No, I don't think so at all, that had nothing to do with it. The proof is that we played our best football at the end of the match. Quite simply, it was a tough match against a Bordeaux side with forwards like Malcom and Laborde, who are very good one-on-one. Ménez had a good night too; they're dangerous.

Balotelli played 90 minutes, what did you make of his performance?
It's always the same thing. He is very strong in the final 30 metres. In that area, he does all the right things. But there is a lot of work to do in terms of tracking back and helping the team win back the ball.

Le Marchand played in midfield for the final half-hour...
That was to change up our system without using up a substitute. He played well in that position; he has the qualities for it. I told him before the match that it was a possibility.

What did you think of your keeper's performance?
Frankly, I don't have anything in particular to say about his performance. I saw other things that I didn't like, in terms of my team's defending. What bothers me is that Bordeaux got through our defence too easily. We were too weak in winning the ball back.

Is this early elimination from the Coupe de la Ligue a disappointment or is it a relief given the big clashes that await in the second half of the season?
You know, after a win I'm never really euphoric, so I won't exaggerate the significance of this defeat. That said, we want to perform well whenever we play. But this match was just three days after Paris; it was tough…
