Galtier: “There were a lot of interesting things"

This is what Christophe Galtier had to say after the Gym's victory over Angers on Sunday in matchday 25 (1-0).

Are you happy with the performance?

Yes, there were a lot of interesting things, especially in terms of being able to play higher up the pitch and create more danger in the opposition's box. Unfortunately, it didn't lead to goals. There were opportunities, sometimes the goalkeeper made saves, sometimes we were clumsy. But overall, I'm happy with the way the team behaved and with what the players were able to do in this match. As far as the chances that we had to defend, they were often due to stupid losses of possession. I'm thinking in particular of the shot that hit the post in the 46th minute. When we worked on the Angers team, we knew that we had to be accurate and not make mistakes in the first few passes, because they also had the ability to go forward quickly. These two or three losses of possession put us in difficulty. It comes down to details. The score could have been better for us and the game would have been more open. When you're leading 1-0, you're not safe and the opponent can reacting well, and the match becomes a little tense. It's also linked to the last two defeats we had in the league. We had an obligation to win to remain competitive. I was convinced that to win we had to play our game. I think we did it quite well.

When you talk about ball losses, there was JC Todibo's mistake at the beginning of the match. Did it annoy you?

Of course I was annoyed by this loss of possession which can really put us in difficulty. We know how difficult it is when you're behind against an opponent like that. It's tough. There was that one, the one from Dante that ended with them hitting the post, there was another one in the second half. We have to be much more demanding, especially as these situations were identified and detailed throughout the week.

Do you feel that you have solved the Gym's lapses in concentration at home?

It would be very pretentious and too easy to believe that things are solved in one match. There were still some lapses in concentration, but it was more a lack of commitment which meant that our home record was not a top one. It's also the learning process of the highest level, knowing how to win these kinds of matches. There was the last game at home against Clermont, where we were not in the game at all, probably because we were too focused on the quarter-final which was played three days later. If the players want to have a good season, a very good season, they have to maintain that high level of expectation and commitment to training every day so that we can perform at the weekend during the matches. I was satisfied, even if the week didn't not started very well in the first session, then there was a lot of commitment and a lot of concentration in the training sessions. That's what I could see this afternoon.

Justin Kluivert is one of the most impressive players at the start of 2022. Has he become essential to the club?

Nobody is essential in a team. But obviously, when you have someone fit, you have to put him on the pitch. Why is he in form? Because he's already adjusted to the pace and the workload. Then, as he was absent for a long time, there was also a lack of bearings for his partners, to know what his strong points were. By training and playing matches, the players have more bearings with him. When he arrived, he had physical problems but also problems of tactical rigour. Physical problems are fine. On a tactical level, he also has a lot of discipline in what I want to see from the team when they don't have the ball. He brings us depth, penetration and technical quality. As he has been doing for the past few weeks, he works a lot on set-pieces. It was a matter of a few millimetres for him to score and set up another two today.

Khephren Thuram is also impressive. How do you explain that?

First of all, from the moment things became clear in his head about what he was going to do. He had offers to leave at a certain point, for different reasons. I thought it was far too early for him to leave, because he could still work here, improve and push for competition. Maybe at one point he thought he wasn't going to find a place in the team. But through hard work and determination, because he is a very professional player, he integrated the team. Then he started games, was good, got into the rhythm. He is a modern midfielder, he has size, he is capable of breaking lines with the ball. He likes to get forward and is keen to score. He was unfortunate this afternoon from a set piece. He's good in this group, always smiling. When I can talk to his dad, I do it with pleasure. I know that his dad is very demanding. He is very careful about his behaviour and his commitment.

Does Kasper Dolberg need a goal to regain his confidence?

I don't know if he is someone who doubts. I know him, he is very introverted but he has his own personality. He is very happy to work throughout the week. Like any striker, and it was also like that for Andy, scoring boosts his confidence tenfold. It didn't come down to much. I decided to put Kasper in with Andy because Amine had a very bad week with slight muscular problems. It didn't take much. The day he finds that luck again, or rather makes it, he will be more prolific for the team.
