Post-match Nice - Leverkusen

Vieira: "Learn from this competition"

OGC Nice Coach Patrick Vieira spoke following his side’s defeat against Bayer Leverkusen (2-3) which eliminates the club from this year’s Europa League.

Coach, after this defeat, how would you analyse your side’s Europa League campaign?
We had good intentions in this competition. But what we showed match after match wasn’t good enough. We need to learn from this competition, to realise where we are lacking, so that we can be more competitive in years to come.

This evening, you conceded another two goals from set pieces.
It’s a weakness because we are conceding an awful lot of goals from set pieces. It’s a size difference and a physical and athletic difference, but there is also naivety and a lack of aggressiveness. It’s about the right mental attitude and from set pieces, we aren’t there. It’s also experience of those little details and blocks. We need to react as quickly as possible,

Even though the supporters couldn’t be in the stadium, they still showed their dissatisfaction before the match.
We expected it. The supporters are passionate, they love this club and it hurts them. We wanted to win this match to dedicate the win to them. The message of the dissatisfaction has been heard. We saw a reaction this evening but it’s still not enough to beat a team that was clearly better than us over the two encounters.
