Interview

Favre: "The players believed"

In his post-match press conference, Lucien Favre looked back on his team's great win and Mickaël Le Bihan's incredible comeback.

Coach, what's your reaction to this win that came despite having made a complete mess of the start of the game?
A complete mess is perhaps an exaggeration, but it wasn't good, that's true. We conceded a stupid goal, totally avoidable. We had our heads down at the back even though that can happen. We struggled to react in a calm way. We went forward much too much and weren't good at winning the ball back, notably on Montpellier's second balls. We lost challenges, and we weren't compact enough. When you don't win the ball back well, you can't play well, that's automatic. We absolutely had to avoid going 2-0 down. We were close to it, that would have made things difficult. They didn't have a lot of clear-cut chances, but they were still very dangerous. We made a few corrections at the break, 0-1 wasn't the end of the world. The players returned as a team, they showed character. We first had to score a goal, and not say at half-time, 'We have to win'. The team handled that well. Le Bihan came on and scored two magnificent centre-forward's goals.

'Le Bihan? In ten seconds, you can see he's good'

Le Bihan, it's a great story…
Great, yes. Spare a thought for Plea, who is going to suffer for 3-4 months. He'd scored quite a lot of goals for us up till now. Le Bihan suffered for 15 months before playing some reserve team games. He's really come back from a long way off. We'll have to be very careful with him. As soon as he came on, he provided a focal point. He makes space for himself, and can give depth. In training, you see he's a good player within ten seconds, that he feels the game. We had to equalise, which he did beautifully by turning with a sidefoot finish. The equaliser freed us up, the team absolutely wanted to win. We dominated play, and that made us a bit calmer.

When did you decide to include Le Bihan in the squad? You didn't seem sure on Wednesday.
I spoke to him to ask him if he was ready to join the squad. He's been training with us for a while now at the start of the week before going to the reserve team ahead of their game at the weekend. He told me he felt ready. It was planned he play half-an-hour.

He scored 'real' goalscorer's goals…
The second is beautiful. He stopped his run and chipped it, if he hadn't, he wouldn't have scored. I take my hat off to him. But I'll say it again: we'll have to be patient with him. It's very rare to be sidelined for so long. We'll have to handle him right through to the end of the season for him to come back progressively. It'll be a question of rhythm.

The brace of a man coming back, Montpellier hitting the post in added time. They're signs…
A little [smiles]. But given the way the second half went, it's deserved. We must have had much more possession than in the first half. This evening, we had a touch of fortune, but we went looking for it. The players believed. We needed to be a little patient. At Rennes, we came back from 2-0 down, but that won't happen every time. If we're hasty, it doesn't work.

With this win, do you put pressure on Monaco and Paris?
Above all, it puts pressure on Nice to say things like that [smiles].
