Interview

"A shame not to share it with our fans"

Interviewed after the match, Gym president Jean-Pierre Rivère expressed his satisfaction at seeing his side bounce back, but also had some choice words concerning bans on Rouge et Noir fans travelling to away games.

President, how do you feel after this win?
We're satisfied; we're back on track and collecting points. Coming to play in Saint-Etienne is never easy. They hadn't lost at home since the beginning of the season, so we had reason to be wary.

Does it mean much that the Gym still sit in top spot?
It's not unimportant. We have some big clubs below us. We can see them there, scoring goals and winning big. We're continuing on our road, taking each match as it comes. It sounds a bit basic to say it out loud, but that's the reality. What's important is that the players continue to play their game and enjoy themselves; if you can do that, the points take care of themselves.

Nonetheless, the Gym had to make do without Mario Balotelli and Paul Baysse…
That's fine, we have a squad. It's important that everyone have game time. But for me, the biggest absence tonight was that of our fans. It's a shame. At Nice, we have a project in place and the fans are a big part of that. Something has to give, because you can't just keep banning our fans from travelling. Absolutely nothing untoward has happened at a Nice home game for two years: there's a great atmosphere and it's festive. When we play away games in Europe, they travel with us en masse and get behind the team. It's a shame they're not with us tonight to share this. It's really regrettable.
