Press conference

Farioli: 'A magical atmosphere'

Read what Francesco Farioli had to say at the post-match press conference after the 1-0 win over Marseille.

It was a difficult win tonight...

We know that Marseille are a great team with incredible technical abilities. Their three midfielders can find solutions to any situation, even under intense pressure. We knew how good they were and the problems they could cause us. In the first half, we alternated between phases of high press and organised defence. In the second half, we won back possession four or five balls in our opponents' half that could have ended in goals. We really played very well. We are very happy with the result and above all with the performance, which was once again very solid and very balanced. It's another step forward in our journey. Tomorrow at 11am, we need to come back with our feet firmly on the ground and our heads in the right place so that we can work hard to prepare for the next match against Clermont, which is not a match to be taken lightly.

Guessand again made the difference coming off the bench. He's often there when you call on him...

If I'm not mistaken, in the pre-match press conference, without naming names, I talked about a few players who deserved more time, who I hadn't yet given the time they needed. Guessand was one of them. I couldn't be happier because Evann is a special player. He works very hard to be a great professional, to be ready. We had a chat recently, he told me that his objective was to work well, first and foremost for himself. Every day, he tries to work hard to bring something to the team, to get the defenders working, to stimulate them. If someone does all the right things, if they work with the dedication and commitment of Evann, who is an example for everyone, in the end, if it's not today, it's tomorrow: things change. The wheel turns and things fall into place. I'm very happy that he made the difference in this derby. I'd also like to give a special mention to Pablo Rosario, another of the lions who have been helping the team throughout the week with energy, passion and determination. He helped us a lot today by adapting to a position that is not his. He did it with commitment and dedication. I just want to thank the boys.

What are you most proud of tonight? Of this unbeaten record, of having conceded just four goals, of never having trailed on the scoreboard this season?

To tell you the truth, the thing that makes me proud today, more than anything else, is that at the end of the day we managed to satisfy our fans. There was a magical atmosphere in the stadium tonight. The fact that we were able to pull off such an important, eagerly-awaited match on home soil, scoring in front of our 'curva' (in front of our active support), is really a special memory to treasure, because these victories don't happen every day. We can enjoy the evening and work even harder tomorrow, because when you reach a milestone, if you want to stay at the top, you absolutely have to keep raising your standards. We still have a lot to achieve.

What did you have to say at half-time, in particular about allowing Youssouf more freedom?

Tonight, perhaps we lacked a little courage to play through the middle. In the first half, I got the feeling that we were all a bit stiff with the ball. We made a lot of technical errors and missed a lot of first touches and passes. We were less fluid in our play. In the second half, the game was a bit different. But the credit also has to go to Marseille, their shape, their great attention to detail and the hard work they put into the defensive phases without the ball. They were able to compensate for every move we made. When a team of Marseille's calibre comes here and defends with that kind of discipline, you have to praise them and the way they prepared for the game. We played to our strengths. It was a very even game in every respect. As I said during the week, it was going to come down to one moment. Now we need to enjoy the win and get back to work tomorrow, focus on Clermont, which is now the most important game coming up.

Did you ever dream of making such a start to your career as Gym coach?

For the moment, we're avoiding looking at the standings, or at least as little as possible. It's been a very positive start. It's hard to imagine anything better, especially as we've played some very high-level teams, and we've still got others to come. It's a positive start and we have to appreciate that. Our objective, I repeat, is to collect as many points as possible, because unfortunately in football there are times when everything turns in your favour, and other times when things are more difficult, like at the start of the season. So you have to enjoy the moment, give the maximum day after day, and try to work very, very hard, so that the difficulties arrive as late as possible.
