Farioli: "A step forward"

Here is Francesco Farioli's analysis after Le Gym's victory against Strasbourg (2-0).

Is this a victory that kick-starts your season?

The victory is in part the result of what we've done before. The season began against Lille, and I say it with pride, there have been three weeks of hard work and dedication. Tonight, we got what the boys deserved. It's an important victory. It's good for us, and it's good for our supporters. We deserved it.

Can you tell us about Atal's goal and Atal in general?

From all the matches he has played, one thing is clear: the quality he has always brought us. Today, he helped us with a great individual piece of skill. Sometimes, we need a player to unlock the situation. I'm happy because he's finding consistency and confidence. Today, he scored a spectacular goal. We are happy for him.

Terem Moffi's goal also shows that things are going in the right direction, despite missed chances?

In my opinion, we were a bit too harsh in the previous matches. I think the only thing that was different tonight compared to what we had seen before, especially in the last two games, is the result. As we mentioned in the pre-match press conference, it was important to be efficient in front of goal. This evening, we scored two goals, but we could probably have scored a few more. There is still a lot to improve. Terem could have scored another goal, Jérémie and Morgan as well. There were plenty of opportunities. This is an important step, but it doesn't change my opinion that we are on the right path and, at the same time, there is still a lot to improve.

Did you feel Terem was getting more involved in the game?

He succeeded in better alternating between moments when he needed to drop back. The move leading to his goal was beautiful because he attacked the depth from a recovered ball. This week, you asked me if Terem was the ideal forward for our style of play. As I mentioned, he's a player who brings us a lot, with unique characteristics. Completing his skill set and understanding when to drop back and when to find space are things that take a bit of time. This evening, he played a good match because he generated 3 or 4 chances with his movement, including a very nice move in the second half, where he pivoted to set up Morgan with a chance on goal. He allows us to be unpredictable, to have different options. Tonight's match is also a small step forward for him.

What can you say about your team's technical quality and some missed opportunities?

We are still in a period where we need to be a bit more fluid, make more precise choices, and be a bit more dynamic. That's what we lacked a bit against Lyon and a bit against Lorient. But I say it again: it's part of a journey. We are asking this team to do something that wasn't really in its DNA. The players are getting closer to it, improving. The growth since the Lille match has been exponential. It's growth in terms of awareness and the ability to manage the game for the midfielders and defenders. It's all the result of hard work, and there is still a lot to do, with a positive mindset and this result that ultimately gives us extra strength to work even better during the international break. We are happy with the result but are convinced that there is still a significant margin for improvement.

Dante and Todibo provided assists. Do you feel it validates your game plan?

I think so. Last week, for a match that was exactly the same, we faced some criticism that we were perhaps too slow. This evening, it was the same match but with a bit more efficiency in front of goal. It has been gradual growth over the last 3 matches, but I'll say it again: we still have a long way to go. This attitude, this quality, this desire to control the game, it's one of the main objectives in the team's development and the development of the players. This evening, besides the three points, we must celebrate another victory: the return of JC Todibo to the national team. We should celebrate it as much as the team's victory because it's something that makes us proud. I hope it's the beginning of the team's journey and the players' journey within our project.

Do you intend to have this control and to dominate the games against Paris and Monaco, Le Gym's next two opponents?

The two matches will be different because the two teams don't have the same approach. Our desire to play will be there, of course, but the thing we need to understand is that we always think that the team that dictates the rhythm is the one with the ball. In reality, it's exactly the opposite; it's the opposing team that sets the pace, and you have to be good at that pace to find solutions. In our last three matches, we faced teams that waited for us in their half to take home a point. This evening was the same. We were patient, and we always wanted to play our game. Against Paris and Monaco, I envision more open matches on both sides. Faster matches. We will need to work towards that, but our goal is to be on the front foot. It won't be easy, but we will go there to play and create opportunities, with great respect and humility, but with desire and determination.
