Nice v Guingamp

Heroes' Sunday

1997 – 2017 : 20 years have passed since the Gym last lifted a trophy.20 years after the victory in the Coupe de France, the heroes of that day whom ensured that Nice would be included on the honours list of French football, will be honoured on Sunday during the visit of Guingamp, the unlucky loser of that final. Before and after the match, on the pitch and at the Museum of Sport, the last generation (before the current one) to qualify for the European Cup will take to the pitch once more, to take the applause of the fans. A moment to warm the hearts of all Gym fans is on the cards.

The younger fans have seen the photos: the header of Fugen knocked on by Salimi, the equaliser from Laspalles, the series of shots on target, Valencony making the saves, Vermuelen for the victory, Fred Gioria with the trophy in his hands. For the rest, it’s a memory. A clear image of an intense moment of their lives. A train journey to the Parc des Prince, the suspense in front of the TV, with family, with friends, the presentation of the trophy the next day at the Ray…

THE ORIGINAL COUPE DE FRANCE COMING FROM PARIS

This Sunday, these memories will resurface as the Gym welcome En Avant Guingamp to the Allianz Riviera. 20 years later, a good number of the players  (Onorati, Crétier, Gioria, Fugen, Chaouch, Mattio, Savini, Valencony,..) and also the coach Takac and the Chairman Bois will help Nice fans relive that magical moment. Before kick-off, each member of that day will be in the centre circle to celebrate, two decades later, with those fans who will never forget. With each of them wearing a replica of the famous red jerseys worn by the 7,000 Nice supporters  present at the Parc that day. A selection of collectors versions will be on offer as prizes to be won by the fans.

Then, the original Coupe de France trophy, graciously lent by the FFF for the occasion, will have its outing on the pitch of the Plaine de Var. This will be followed by a lap of honour before the proceedings of Sunday's encounter get underway.

EXTRA TIME AT THE MUSEUM OF SPORT

The other exciting event on Sunday will take place after the final whistle. In a Museum of Sport specially furnished for the occasion, following the same set-up as the one used for the club's 110 year anniversary, the legends will take their places around a long table and they will take questions from the fans from 17:30. Supporters will equally have the chance to pose for photos next to the Coupe de France trophy whilst the Q&A session takes place.

An opportunity to mix the matches of today with yesteryear...
