A good start…

After finishing the first half of the season in 2nd place, José's team stalled in the second half of the season, finally finishing a great campaign in 10th place. 8 games. 5 wins, 2 draws, 1 defeat. 1 point deduction, 16 in total, a place on the podium before the calendar update (October 27 against Marseille), a positive dynamic. A look back at the start of the season for Les Aiglons, through 3 key figures put into perspective.

Nice have 16 points after 8 games in Ligue 1 2021/22, their 3rd best total at this stage in the 21st century. Which seasons have the Aiglons advanced faster than the current crop? That of the comeback, which began brilliantly for Gernot Rohr's men, who picked up 17 points in 8 games. As many points as coach Galtier's team would have had if they had not suffered a point deduction...

After a first half of the season left them in 2nd place, José's team stalled in the second half, finally finishing a great adventure in 10th place.

Only one other team, in the 21st century, has started better than the current one. The 2016-17 season, led by Lucien Favre and embodied by Dante, Baysse, Seri, Cyprien, Belhanda and Balotelli. On fire very early on, the group had amassed 20 points in 8 games. Finished autumn leaders, then finished the season on the podium (3rd).

Impressive at the back

The goal conceded against Brest will remain the negative point of the last game (2-1). It does not, however, tarnish the defensive record of the rouge et noir block since the start of the league. Having only conceded four goals in the league, they are the best defence ahead of Paris, Angers, Lorient and Rennes (9), who all have one more game played. It is only once in the 21st century that they have conceded only four goals in eight games: in 2002-03. The Aiglons that season, known for their determination, their ability to defend together and their self-sacrifice, had the same solidity as the current Aiglons, with Cobos, Pancho, Noé or Varrault.

Franck Honorat's goal in injury time last Saturday was an unfortunate moment.

Without it, the solidity of Christophe Galtier's Gym would not have been matched for 20 years...

Ruthless in attack

In addition to their solidity, Les Aiglons have shown real consistency in attack during the first three months of the competition. With 17 goals, they currently have the 2nd highest attack in the country with one game in hand, behind PSG (22). Only once since 2002 has a rouge et noir attack started with more goals: in 2015-16. Led by their playmaker, Hatem Ben Arfa, Claude Puel's men set alight every place they visited, scoring 20 goals in 8 games.

Even the 2016-17 season, which ended on the podium, produced fewer goals than the current one (14). A number which Kaba, Poussin, and the 2002 men matched (14 goals in 8 games).
