Lyon 2-3 Nice

A nice way to end the season

On Sunday, an impressive Gym side came out on top at Lyon on the final day of the 2020-21 season (2-3).

The first five minutes were frenetic, with attacks at both ends and this set the tone for a sublime evening of attacking football. In a match where the midfield was almost secondary, the two sides went toe to toe, with Le Gym looking to finish positively and Lyon seeking qualification for the Champions League.

Les Niçois, looking100% relaxed, came out of this battle on top. Opening up the game, Les Gones discovered their weaknesses, something Les Azuréens took full advantage of. The seven shots at the break, including four at both end perfectly summed up the first 45 minutes. 45 minutes where the home side first took the lead, thanks to a header from Toko Ekambi (1-0, 14’); where they were pegged back by Kasper Dolberg, who was perfectly switched on at the back post to tap home Lees-Melou's effort (1-1, 26’); and where Le Gym fell behind once more after another header from the former Angers man secured his brace following another gift from Depay (2-1, 40’).

An incredible comeback

Aouar saw a goal deservedly ruled out, after the man with the assist (Toko Ekambi) was in an offside position at the start of the move. Les Aiglons came back out after the break with strength, desire, speed and technique, turning the game on its head in a period of just 7 minutes. Thanks to Kamara in the first instance, when he let rip from 25 metres out (2-2, 50’). Then through Saliba, who scored his first L1 goal with a header after a cross into the box from Gouiri (2-3, 57’). The men from the Côte in their 4-3-3, continued with relentless attacks, driven forward by an excellent Gouiri. They defended with commitment, but Les Gones appeared less inspired and incisive as the minutes went by.

Les Aiglons didn't give up until the final whistle and were rewarded with a very nice victory to cap off the 2020-21 season.
