Ursea ‘We just couldn’t step it up a level’

The OGC Nice manager Adrian Ursea spoke in the post-match press conference about the Gym’s Coupe de France elimination this Monday night against Monaco (1-2).

Adrian, how would you explain this defeat against Monaco tonight?

We struggled because our opponents were so good and caused us lots of problems and stopped us from putting them under pressure through their intense press and good organisation. But we can’t say that the team didn’t try to qualify tonight.

The team found it difficult to create chances…

It just shows this Monaco side’s ability. We couldn’t attack like we wanted to and make them worry. We just couldn’t up our level and match Monaco tonight. They are a really powerful and solid side. They made us defend and have an interesting way of attacking and endanger us when playing out from the back. We need to learn from it and prepare for the rest of the league season.

The second goal came after another risk taken in defence…

It’s not the first time. Our game is based on taking risks playing the ball out. What’s most important is to know what the plan is to reduce the amount of errors. It was a succession of errors that led to that goal. We were still in the game and it’s a shame because conceding that goal killed the game off.

After this elimination in the cup and the situation in the league what are the Gym’s goals for the end of the season?

We know that it’s a disappointing season. I think we still need points in the league to be safe and free from relegation. We were in a situation where we’re trying to fix our issues and there are ups and downs that’s what our season has been. It’s tough to find stability. I haven’t been able to keep the same team and we know that teams need stability to improve. That makes it difficult to set goals. We need to work on getting the injured players back and create some competition in the side and find consistency in the team selection. We’ve still got games left and we can improve and move forward. The goal is now the next game against Lorient this Sunday. We need to prepare well and get points from the game to relax a bit more and look forward. We’ll look at points at the end of the season.

Do you not personally feel a bit discouraged with the amount of games and injuries?

No. It’s a disappointment because we wanted to qualify tonight and try to bring happiness to the fans. Unfortunately we couldn’t do that. From a personal standpoint I’m still feeling comfortable and still have the desire to accomplish the mission that the club set for me that’s it. From tomorrow we’ll focus on the next game.
