Nice 0-2 Monaco

The Gym knocked out by Monaco

This Monday the Gym were knocked out of the Coupe de France by Monaco (0-2).

Having lost both derbies in Ligue 1 the Aiglons had an opportunity to avenge those losses in the cup and a competition known for its upsets and emotion. They weren’t able to do so on a cold night in which they were dominated in the first half before fighting back in the second but unable to draw level.

In the first 45 minutes Adrian Ursea’s men set up in a 4-3-3 formation similar to the one that faced Rennes with Nsoki at left back, Kamara on the left wing and Lees-Melou back in midfield but Monaco quickly controlled the pace of the game. And they scored the opener with a well worked move as Fabregas played the ball back to Volland who beat Benitez (0-1, 30’).

After going into half time behind the Rouge et Noir came out reinvigorated after the break. Claude-Maurice was played in by Kamara and hit a powerful strike that was blocked. Minutes after that substitute Dolberg had the locals’ best chance of the game as he received the ball from Gouiri, turned, and hit his shot against the post damaging the Gym’s chance to equalise (62’).

Only one goal down until the final moments Nice won some dangerous set pieces without really troubling Monaco who put the game to bed late on. Aguilar picked the ball up after a poor clearance and his cross goal strike found the back of the net (0-2, 87’).
