7 March: A comeback in the derby

A look back at 10 stand out dates for Les Aiglons in 2020.

There are some derbies that are quickly forgotten and others that remain in memories forever. The one on 7 March falls into the second category. For its context, its drama, the impression that everything could just collapse and paradoxically, that everything was in the process of being built.  It was Matchday 28. Patrick Vieira’s side headed into the game on the back of an impressive winter, during which they had climbed into the top part of the table after losing just one of their previous 12 outings. Just a stone’s throw behind those battling for the European places and Monaco, themselves. The visitors’ quality quickly put the home side under pressure and Ben Yedder took full advantage of a rapid attacking move to take the lead in style.

After the break, Le Gym switched systems from three at the back to one with Danilo at 6 and Herelle on the right of the defence. Having suffered in the first half, the shape of the game changed and Le Gym put ASM under pressure. In the final half an hour of the match, Ounas found Dolberg and the Dane got the equaliser with a deft header into the back of the net. The match completely turned on its head. ASM hit the bar, Le Gym attacked, the players really got going and the fans did too. In the 93rd minute, Moussa Wagué, on loan from Barcelona, sent in an almost anodyne cross into the box. Almost, because Kasper Dolberg sent the Allianz Riviera into a frenzy when he pipped in front of the goalkeeper to flick home to take home all three points.

At the end of Matchday 28, Lyon had lost, as had Montpellier and Monaco. Nice made the most of those defeats to climb up to 6th place.

The table remained tight between 5th (Reims) and 13th (Nantes), with 9 teams almost neck and neck, separated by a gap of just four points.
