Vieira : « These shocking events affect us all »

The OGC Nice coach Patrick Vieira spoke during the post-match press conference after their win against l'Hapoël Beer-Sheva (1-0).

How have the group reacted to the events of this morning in Nice ?
Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and all the people of Nice who are suffering and grieving. Speaking about football is very tough after such a tragedy. Football seems almost unimportant, but it’s our job and we wanted to represent both the club and the city tonight. This drama affects us all and the country is in mourning. But we need to stand tall.

Tonight, you got the job done against Hapoël Beer-Sheva (1-0) and that must be reassuring.
It was an important win. I liked our first half when we played with a lot of intensity and added rhythm to the game. In the second half we lacked a bit of defensive stability and there was always a risk of conceding at the end. That’s where we need to improve and be a lot more dangerous in the final third. We had some moments where we should have played the ball forward quicker. We lack the cutthroat mentality you need to score more goals.

Did you see some better things from your team tonight?
Yes, especially in the first half. What bothered me once more, though, was the lack of chances created going forward. I feel like we aren’t direct enough in the box, that we play things too safe sometimes, and that we don’t keep our shape offensively. We need to score more because you can’t guarantee a clean sheet. Defensively we played pretty well, but we need to take our chances.

What did you think of Jeff Reine-Adélaïde when he came off the bench (57th minute)?
He’s not at his best physically, but he gives us technique and rigour. It’s the same for all forwards. They need to be disciplined and aggressive to help us do what we want to do. We expect a lot of responsibility from the defenders, but the forwards need to take more responsibility in the final third to be dangerous and to score goals. That’s the area where we need to improve.
