J-P. Rivère : « It was important to play tonight »

Some moments of silence are unlike any others. The atmosphere in the stadium was already subdued with the game being played behind closed doors, but there was a very strange feeling just before kick-off tonight. The club’s announcer uttered the words: «Now more than ever, we stand united against brutality» before there was a minute’s silence. The 22 players and officials, all wearing black armbands, then came together, making for a very poignant moment in the face of another tragedy in the city of Nice.

«What happened this morning was a massive shock », said club president Rivère. « Such sad memories came flooding back. I can’t believe that we are living this nightmare once more, four years on ».

« Some people may have wondered whether it made sense to play a football match tonight, but we felt it was important to play. We wanted to say : « We’re still standing » he added. «Even if, just like in 2016, everyone was carrying this extra weight on their shoulders. Tonight we’ll remember a win and the three points. But far more importantly, our thoughts are with the families grieving. We offer them all our support at this incredibly difficult time ».
