Post-match Nice 1-1 Celtic

Vieira: "In progress"

Patrick Vieira delivered his analysis after his side’s friendly against Celtic, which ended in a draw at the Groupama Stadium (1-1).

Coach, what will you take away from this game?
It was an interesting match for us. The first quarter of an hour was tough: we were troubled by the physical impact and intensity that the Scots put into the game and we struggled to get into it. We will need to improve in that area. But it’s a match that will help us to progress. The team is in the process of finding itself bit by bit, we have progressed compared to the matches against Lyon (1-0) and Saint-Étienne (4-1). Things are starting to take shape, it’s interesting. At the same time, it allows us to see what we are lacking, because we will need to be a little more dangerous in the opposition’s box.

Although the terraces weren’t full, there were fans back in the stadium…
It’s an improvement from our last match here. Football is an entertainment business and we need supporters in the stadium in order to share our passion. We prefer it when there are supporters in the ground, that’s for sure.

What did you make of Bambu’s performance?
In the first half at Saint-Étienne, he showed some encouraging things. He has come from Brazil and needs time to adapt and find his rhythm, but he is willing to listen and wants to progress. We will work with him to ensure he progresses.

"Kasper is feeling better and better"

Kasper Dolberg scored a top class goal…
That’s why we put in the effort to sign him last year. We were aware of his potential. He arrived last year in a difficult situation, he was struggling physically because he hadn’t played for a long time. But we saw what he can do at the end of his season… He is having a very good pre-season and is starting to feel better and better. The fact that he has Amine (Gouiri) alongside him is helping him because they get on very well.

We got the chance to see several youngsters take to the pitch. What did you make of their performances?
It was very good. Salim (Ben Seghir) looked very interesting. I found him to be comfortable technically and with a strong personality. Alexandre (Parsemain) was a bit isolated up-front, so it was a bit tough for him. Alexis (Trouillet) looked good with the ball, he passed well and barely misplaced a pass. Pedro (Brazão) has worked an awful lot, but he still wastes a little too much in his play. These are good tests for them: they are here to learn and to see what it means to be in the first team. Our goal is to help them to progress and to try to create chances for them to play.

"In a 4-3-3 against Rangers"

Do you think that you will stick with the same formation for the match against Rangers (second match of the Trophée Veolia, kick-off on Saturday at 6.15pm)?
Yes. We will stick with the 4-3-3. We will make a small tactical change for the next match against Liège.

Will any of the injured players be making their return?
Alexis (Claude-Maurice) will play part of the match.
