Aiglon of the match

Benitez, a clear winner

A key player in the 2-0 win over Toulouse, Walter Benitez was a clear winner in the voting for the Crédit Agricole Aiglon of the Match, with 68.3 % of the votes.

Deep in second half stoppage time at Le Stadium, after what has been a disappointing 45 minutes from Le Gym, Myziane brought down Gradel in the box and Toulouse had a penalty. The victory that was within reach, was suddenly hanging by a single thread… But that thread was named Benitez and it did not break.

Like in 2017, where he faced up to Durmaz in the same situation in the same stadium, Walter answered the challenge. With his eyes fixed on Leya Iseka, the Argentinian ‘keeper waited until the last minute before moving to his left to make the save, securing the three precious points for Les Aiglons. For this moment, and his overall performance, the majority of you named the former Quilmes player, your man of the match.

Pierre Lees-Melou came home second in the vote with 28.2%. As industrious and influential as ever, the midfielder opened the scoring inside the opening 15 minutes. Well set up by Ounas, PLM fired hard past his former Dijon teammate Baptiste Reynet to set Le Gym on the road to victory. It was his fifth Ligue 1 goal of the season (six goals in all competitions) for Nice’s top assists provider (6 assists).

And finally Christophe Herelle completed the top three with 3.5% of the votes. The central defender made several important tackles in his new position on the right side of the defence before completing the victory in second-half stoppage time. By scoring his third goal of the season he joined Pablo and Yunis Abdelhamid as the league’s top scoring defender.
