Vieira: “We need to keep this going”

Patrick, a convincing victory this evening to erase the defeat three days ago…

It doesn’t erase it. But that being said, the performance tonight was excellent in all areas. Unfortunately, we conceded this goal which frustrates us a bit. I would have liked to have finished the match without conceding a goal. The match this evening shows us the lack of consistency in our performances, there is a lack of rigour in order to keep these performances going. We need to keep working.

Are you satisfied with your squad’s performance?

Yes, both in attack and defence. In our domination of the match and technical ability too. Physically, we knew that we were going to drop off at some point given the three matches over such a short period. Those players that came on brought something to the game, it was important.

Does this victory lift some of the clouds?

Following the defeat at St Etienne, we needed to get going with a win. We added style to our game but we know that not everything was perfect, and that it won’t make us forget the defeat on Wednesday. We are in the process of putting things in place, we see good things and some very bad things. We need to try to improve what isn’t working through hard work.

What is needed in order to reassure yourselves? Winning back to back?

Yes, to do what we are struggling to do… win away from home. We need to recover well this week and be more solid away from home. We need to manage games more effectively. The positive this evening is that when we didn’t have the ball, the players were focussed, they worked as a team to make things more difficult for Metz. Now, I am expecting the same thing away from home.

Scoring quickly changed the face of the match…

Yes, the early goal, Walter Benitez’s save at 1-0, these are all important moments in a match. The small details turned in our favour, we made the most of them. I liked the fact that we have started to find each other. Wylan (Cyprien) and Pierre (Lees-Melou) were extraordinary in attack and defence (…..), physically, the players are much better. It’s interesting for what is to come. At Brest, we will need to be a lot more solid defensively than we were at Saint-Etienne. To have Dante on the pitch will give a lot of confidence to the players around him.
