Nice 2-1 Red Star

Le Gym continue their cup run

With a victory over Red Star on Saturday afternoon (2-1), Le Gym qualified for the Round of 16 of the Coupe de France. Les Aiglons hadn’t reached this stage of the competition since the 2013/14 season.

Against a side that currently sits in second place in National 1 and full of confidence, the Niçois started the game with the ball at their feet.

Les Aiglons set themselves up high in the Red Star half and passed the ball well as they looked for the opener. The first chance of the game came quickly. In the 8th minute, Boudaoui pulled his shot too much from the edge of the box, after Claude-Maurice had cut the ball back well.

The visitors then had a good chance from a corner (10’), but Le Gym’s forwards weren’t put off and combined beautifully on the edge of the Red Star box, before Dolberg found the back of the net  (13’). The referee ruled out the Danish international’s goal after an offside during the build-up.

Despite not being rewarded for their good intentions, the home side kept pushing. Dolberg won a free-kick centrally and Cyprien’s effort was tipped onto the bar by the Red Star keeper (24’). A few moments later, Danilo made the most of a corner from Ounas to beat Oberhauser with his right and send the Allianz Riviera into pandemonium (1-0, 26’). His first goal for the club.

Liberated by the opener, Patrick Vieira’s side continued to dominate the encounter. Just two minutes after the opener, Ganago, at the back post, benefitted from some smart work from Claude-Maurice in the box to double Les Aiglons’ lead (2-0, 29’). The game really got going and, just after,  Benitez was called into action and made a top save to maintain the lead (30').

Les Aiglons headed into the dressing room at half-time with a deserved lead. A lead that was reduced in the final moments of the game, when Hamache converted from the penalty spot  (2-1, 90'+2).
