Patrick Vieira was disappointed by his side’s defensive shortcomings on Wednesday against Saint-Étienne (1-4).

“Defensively, we lacked concentration and accuracy in our positioning and decision making. We were disastrous defensively, both individually and as a team. It’s a huge disappointment. The squad failed individually. If we had been able to stay in the match a little longer, there was scope to make something of the game.

“Defensively, we showed our limitations. There were players who didn’t get into the game, others hadn’t played for a long time. For the four at the back, it was tough but I was expecting more. It’s a huge disappointment. We weren’t at the same level that we were at in our last match against Angers (3-1 victory). We didn’t do the basics in defence, but we need to stand up to our critics and this non-performance so that we can get going again in our next match.”
