P. Vieira: “Stop making these errors”

Patrick Vieira spoke to the press after Le Gym’s defeat at Lyon (2-1).

Coach, how are you feeling after this match?

There are an awful lot of regrets. Even more so than in our previous matches, because we weren’t dangerous in the final 30 metres of the pitch. This evening, we had the chances to score more than one goal. Effectiveness in front of goal made the difference, both in attack and defence. This evening, there is a lot of frustration because we could have caused this team more problems than we did and we deserved a lot more.

What was your message to the players at half-time?

The message was to keep our width, to remain disciplined, to respect the game and to add even more rhythm to be able to find the gaps. We managed to do it, but unfortunately, we were lacking accuracy in our crosses. We made some poor choices.

What was your side missing?

Precision in our final pass in attack. And then in defence, the incomprehensible mistakes that we made in the first 30 minutes that really hurt us. We are still losing too many balls in the final 30 metres, which are costing us dearly, especially against teams like Lyon. We need to look back at the replays so that we don’t make these mistakes again. For as long as we are unable to cut out these issues in our own half, we are always at risk of being made to pay. On the other hand, the encouraging thing is the chances we created. The players are getting better and better and are beginning to develop links between themselves on the pitch. On the whole, despite the defeat, I liked the attitude, the commitment, the discipline, the seriousness in terms of what we put in place.
