Rennes 1-2 Nice

The Gym stun Rennes at the last!

On Sunday, Les Aiglons stunned league leaders Stade Rennais at their own Roazhon Park (1-2) thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Racine Coly.

The match

Faced with confident opponents who had won their first three outings of the season, Patrick Vieira's men encountered some difficulties early on - in open play but also from set pieces. And it was from a corner that Rennes broke the deadlock, an unfortunate Gautier Lloris turning an off-target header from Jérémy Morel into his own net (1-0, 25'). On the back foot, Nice managed to get their heads above water intermittently, usually thanks to the all-action Youcef Atal who notably had a shot parried for a corner by Edouard Mendy (23').

The start of the second half had Nice fearing the worst, with Rennes placing a bullet header just wide of Benitez's post. This was, perhaps, the turning point of the game. Les Aiglons wrested the upper hand way from their hosts and Wylan Cyprien went agonisingly close to equalising only to see Morel turn his effort away in extremis. , without an in-extreme rescue of Morel. Youcef Atal then offered Cyprien the chance to make it 1-1, drawing the foul from Hamari Traoré in the area. The midfielder kept his nerve and stroked home confortably from the spot, sending Mendy the wrong way to level the score (1-1, 63').

An emboldened Nice then stepped up the pressure in the final minutes of the match and were rewarded in breath-taking fashion. Racine Coly took advantage of a superb pass from Stanley Nsoki and tapped the ball into the empty net for a shock winner in Brittany (1-2, 92').

Patrick Vieira's choices

For Ligue 1 Conforama's Week 4, Patrick Vieira handed first starts of the  season with Bassem Srarfi, Youcef Atal and Gauthier Lloris. The latter formed the central defence with Andy Pelmard, while Patrick Burner and Racine Coly occupied the wings.

In midfield, captain Cyprien played alongside PLM and Adrien Tameze, while Lusamba was at the forefront of the attack, supported by Srarfi and Atal.

The entries of Ganago and Ounas a quarter of an hour before the final whistle, in place of Srarfi and Lusamba respectively, hurt the Breton side very much.

Newly signed Stanley Nsoki's coming off the bench (86') was also decisive, the former Parisian offering Racine Coly the winning goal a few minutes after his entry.
