Influential in midfield and with a decisive role in both goals, Wylan Cyprien made his mark on the first victory of the 2019-20 season on Saturday against Amiens (2-1).

He pulled on his boots in mid-June, two weeks ahead of the rest of his teammates, in order to “give himself every chance” after an adductor injury kept him out of the final games of last season. And from the very get go of competitive football this campaign, the former Lens midfielder, who hadn’t played in L1 since 7 April, looked particularly impressive.

Two winning corners

Above and beyond the influence he showed on the game, the Aiglon proved decisive on two occasions from corners. “We had worked on them a lot in training last week”, explained Cyprien, who played in front of the back four on Saturday evening.

Work that first paid off immediately for the first Nice goal, following a run from Le Bihan: “I knew that if Micka’ came into the box, it was the signal. As soon as he got there, I pinged the ball in to him and he then fired in to Christophe (Hérelle) who like a fox, pounced on the chance.”

Then for the winning goal, which he landed perfectly onto Dante’s head, at the end of added time. “Better late than never, smiled the number 25. We need to maintain this strength from set-pieces.”
