Vieira: “A frustrating 0-0”

The Aiglons’ coach Patrick Vieira was frustrated by his side’s second draw in four days on Tuesday evening against Angers (0-0).

Patrick, it’s your second consecutive 0-0, how do you compare this game with the previous one?

I am not sure which one I preferred but it was a very complicated game this evening. We came up against a side who didn’t give us much space. We surprised them in the first fifteen minutes with our set-up, we created 2-3 chances that we should have made the most of, but unfortunately we were unable to score. Then they adapted to the game and it was more difficult for us. In the second half, we suffered more because we didn’t put any pace into our game. In the end, we finish with a frustrating 0-0. But as you say, when you don’t win, you mustn’t lose. The point this evening is better than nothing.

You had several huge chances that you missed in the first half. Were you worried that you might regret them afterwards?

We can think of the first matches at home maybe. But compared with those games, I think that in the second half, we showed maturity. We were disciplined, we didn’t collapse, this allowed us to take home at least a point.

The surprise of the evening was to see Saint-Maximin on the left wing. Do you see a future for him in this position?

He struggled a bit this evening, but we are going to look for solutions in order to be more fluid offensively, to create more chances, to be more dangerous. Our tactics worked for half an hour, but in the second half, we struggled in attack.

Your difficulty in scoring remains a constant…

We need to continue to work. We tried something this evening, we will almost certainly try something else on Friday. Some players are lacking in confidence and that can be seen. We need to stay together, to work and to score that goal which will turn things around.

Your opinion on Makengo’s performance in the role behind the striker?

He created a chance for himself at the start, and he should have tucked it away. He worked a lot and was available for the team. I think that he can do great things in this position.

You said to us that you think you will try something else against Monaco. Does that mean that you weren’t convinced by what you have seen this evening?

This evening wasn’t perfect. We can do better, especially in attack. I wasn’t satisfied by the lack of runs in behind their back five. We wanted the ball into feet all the time and didn’t attack the space enough.

Your players seemed tired, can we expect changes?

We will see how things go in training tomorrow, but yes there is some fatigue, but it’s a derby, we need to recover quickly and be ready. Dante? I am not sure yet, we will wait for the results of the tests tomorrow.
