Interview

Vieira: “We should have won it”

How do you feel after this draw?

There is lots of frustration. I am annoyed and disappointed. We should have won this match and returned to Nice with the three points. We were better, unfortunately we weren’t able to score that second goal that could have put it beyond doubt. We were caught out by naivety and youth, and there was a lack of experience in the key moments of the game which cost us dearly. It’s a huge disappointment because our game was serious, we were disciplined, we tried to control the game. To leave here with one point, it’s not enough.

How can you explain the missed chance at 2-1?

It’s difficult to criticise them. They were quite selfless, they each tried to set up a player who they felt was in a better position. But we lacked conviction and experience, the three players involved are between 19 and 21 years old. This kind of chance will help them to mature and to develop. But it’s true that a chance like that, you expect it to be put away. I am disappointed for the players, for Myziane especially, because he worked extremely hard for the team. The three up-front did brilliantly defensively, because they prevented Toulouse from coming out cleanly.

The lack of efficiency is a recurring theme...

Yes, it has become habitual since the start of the season, We must score more goals with the chances that we are creating. But we will improve because we have the quality to do so. It remains encouraging but not good enough in terms of points.

How do you feel after two months of competition?

I feel very good. I am in a good club with a Managing Director and President who have clear ideas on where we are and what they want to put into place. There are steps to take. We are a very young team, there is potential but potential unfortunately isn’t enough to win matches, as we have seen this evening. We have quite a few players who are injured, others who are not fit, when they will be back, we will be better.

We get the feeling that your team has more and more certainty…

We have a very young squad. We needed time in order to put interesting things into place. I can’t criticise them for their concentration in training. They are serious and so they will only get better. Despite the disappointment this evening, we need to keep our heads up and to continue to work. It’s up to the club and I to continue to believe in these kids. I am optimistic for the future.
