Interview

Vieira: “Not much to criticise my players for”

In front of the press, the Aiglons’ coach praised the spirit shown by his side and their good start to the game, which they were unfortunately unable to take advantage of.

Patrick, how do you analyse this game?

When you lose 3-0, it’s difficult. I don’t have much to criticise my players for. In their attitude, they gave their best. We tried to cause them problems but unfortunately, in our good first twenty minutes, we didn’t manage to score, which would have helped us. From the moment that Paris scored their first goal, it became more and more complicated for us.

Nice made an audacious start to the game, can we qualify it as such?

Yes, we took lots of risks, it’s the way we wanted to approach the game. The first quarter of an hour was ver interesting, but we weren’t able to score that goal. We knew that with the quality that they have, they were going to have 2 or 3 clear-cut chances, which they did have. When they took the lead, they had the technical dominance and we struggled to put them under pressure given their technical quality. The quality of PSG was too much for us.

Neymar caused you lots of problems…

He and Di Maria caused us lots of problems tactically. They played well between the lines, it was difficult for us to come out from the back, we were always getting there slightly late. We tried to rectify that at half-time but it was still difficult. The game plan that we wanted to put in place didn’t work because there were some extraordinary players up against us. PSG’s tactics? Yes, I was surprised and we tried to adapt.

Despite the heavy defeat, is it difficult to draw conclusions after a match against PSG who are clearly in a different league from the rest of the teams? We get the feeling that it’s understandable to lose…

No, it’s not understandable. The important thing is to give yourself the chance to make them doubt themselves and to put them under pressure. Of course, they have very good players, we saw their technical dominance, their calmness. That we decide to go after them or to all sit back, the difficulty will be there. We tried to put pressure on them, to go after them, but if we arrive a bit too late in the middle, a player like Rabiot can find space and it becomes complicated for us.

Can you draw any conclusions after eight games?

It’s too early for us to draw conclusions. Let’s say that it could have been worse, it could have been better (smiles).
