Look back at 2017-18

The two faces of January

10 days after the end of the 2017-18 season and 70 days before the next campaign begins, OGCNICE.com offers you a chance to dive back, month by month, into the longest season in the Gym’s history.

Back in the upper echelons of the table after the winter break, the Aiglons started 2018 with two cup eliminations. In the league, the unbeaten run continued until Metz.

The story

2018 started in a complicated manner, given that the Aiglons were knocked out of the two national cups from the get go (against Toulouse and Monaco, during an evening where video referees were being tested).

The return to L1, however, went rather well. At home, the Aiglons did the necessary. After a tough win over Amiens, they were boosted by the return of Wylan Cyprien, to bring down St-Etienne. Away from home, the record could have been very positive, if Monaco hadn’t scored an avoidable goal at the end of a derby which was lit up by Balotelli‘s two goals (2-2). A defeat at Metz brought the month to a close. Having arrived in August, Wesley Sneijder left the Gym. Young promising winger, Ihsan Sacko joined.

The key moment

Aiglon of the Month

In two starts, Wylan Cyprien marked his return. Firstly putting in a solid performance at the Louis-II, then by securing the three points at the Allianz against Saint-Etienne, with an excellent free-kick. With 40% of the votes the midfielder just beat Mario Balotelli who had been so good against Monaco (38%).

The extra information

Coming to an end at the Saint-Symphorien, the longest unbeaten run of the season lasted eight matches, from week 15 until week 22. During this period, the Aiglons won back to back against Toulouse (1-2), Metz (3-1), Nantes (1-2), Bordeaux (1-0), Amiens (1-0) and Saint-Etienne (1-0), and shared the points with Lille (1-1) and Monaco (2-2).
