Look back at 2017-18

The surge in December

10 days after the end of the 2017-18 season and 70 days before the next campaign begins, OGCNICE.com offers you a chance to dive back, month by month, into the longest season in the Gym’s history.

The win at Toulouse served as a turning player point for Lucien Favre’s side, who pushed on in December and finished the year in 6th position.

The story

Coming back from hell at Toulouse, the Gym began its surge up the table. After the game at the Stadium, everything seemed to go in its favour. The Aiglons began the month with a second straight victory at Metz. Then fell to defeat at Arnhem, with a young side and 7 first team players left back in Nice. They then picked up a win at the Beaujoire having trailed and qualified for the Coupe de la Ligue thanks to another Balotelli masterpiece and two penalty saves for Cardinale… They continued the good run at home against Bordeaux, before concluding with a draw at Lille. At the winter break, the club sat in 6th place and was in the running in 4 competitions (Europa League, L1, Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue).

The key moment

The extra information

By replacing Alassane Plea in the 66th minute at Arnhem, Lamine Diaby-Fadiga allowed the Gym to break a new record. The forward, who was born on 19 January 2001 in Grasse, is the first player born in the new millennium to wear the Gym’s colours. At only 16 years, 10 months, 19 days, he also became the youngest player in the club’s history to play in a European fixture.
