September: Almost perfect

10 days after the end of the 2017-18 season and 70 days before the next campaign begins, OGCNICE.com offers you a chance to dive back, month by month, into the longest season in the Gym’s history.

After having blown hot and cold in August, the Aiglons followed with an almost perfect month in September.

The story

With an almost full squad, the Gym started to perform. Like the year before, at the same period the neighbours from the rock fell to defeat at the Allianz (4-0), thanks to a brace from Balotelli, one goal for Plea and one for Ganago, a new face in the squad after rising through the  reserves over the summer. Lucien Favre went for a flat 4-4-2, offering huge freedom to the Plea – Balotelli duo up-front.

The European campaign started well, as the Gym put 5 past Zulte-Waregem and 3 against Vitesse Arnhem. Two outings where Plea scored a brace in each. With confidence, the squad got going again, beat Rennes thanks to a bullet strike from the excellent Mario and earned a draw against Angers after trailing by 2. The Gym sat in 9th place at the end of the month.

The key moment

Aiglon of the Month

Scorer (5 goals including a brace against Monaco), playmaker (at Waregem), involved, Mario Balotelli took home 69% of your votes and pipped his strike partner, Alassane Plea to the trophy (31%).

The extra details

By winning 1-5 in Belgium, Lucien Favre’s side beat the club’s record for the biggest win away from home in Europe. To the joy of the 400 Nice supporters who had travelled to the Arc-en-ciel Stadium.
