No, a victory for Marseille won’t change anything for 7th place

72 hours before the match between Lyon - Nice which will bring the 2017-18 to a close, the Groupama Stadium will play host to the final of the Europa League, between Olympique de Marseille and Atletico Madrid. A final that will not have impact on OGC Nice, but could make a difference for the hosts.

The battle for the Europa League will not be impacted

Although the wins for Paris SG in the national cups had the potential to open up European places in the league, the result of the Europa League final will have no effect on the Gym and the competition. 7th place in L1 will not qualify for Europe if Marseille win.

Whatever happens, 5th place will qualify for the group stages of the Europa League, whilst 6th will begin their campaign in the 2nd round of qualifying.

A win for OM would benefit…Marseille

If they win on Wednesday, Rudi Garcia’s team will confirm their ticket for the next group stages of the... Champions League, and this is irrespective of their final league position. On the other hand, if the Lyonnais or the Monégasques finish in 4th, they will qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

A defeat for OM could be of benefit to… 3rd

The main result of the final will be for the team in 3rd place. If Atletico (2nd in La Liga and already qualified for the group stage thanks to their league position) win the Europa League, the team in 3rd in Ligue 1 will avoid TQ3 and the play-offs in order to reach the group stages of the Champions League. In other words, Lyon, currently in 3rd, could avoid the preliminary rounds of the Champions League if they remain in 3rd and Atletico win.
