Galtier: 'Disappointed for the boys'

Find out what Christophe Galtier had to say after the draw between Nice and Marseille (1-1).

Coach, how would you analyse the game?
I think my players deserved to win. I'm disappointed for them. We had a very good first half-hour, totally different from what we did in the first game against Marseille, with a different game plan. It made it difficult for them. If we had been able to add to the score and score that second goal in the first half, the game would certainly have been different. We let up in the last 10-12 minutes of our first half. We let up on our pressure and made some technical mistakes that put Marseille back in the game. They scored a beautiful goal with a great move. Even if in any move there are always mistakes, in its conception, it was a beautiful goal. In the second half, unfortunately, the only striker we had left got injured quite quickly, while Evann was doing a very good job. At that point, things get complicated, because you lack the ammunition to keep pressure on the Marseille defence. If you let them play, they are good, they are comfortable. But even with the changes we made, we tried to keep the pressure on them. We could have been more dangerous in a few situations, especially from set-pieces, if we had been more accurate. We didn't manage to do that. That's why I say it's a shame for the boys, who played really well three days after the game against Lyon.

Did you plan to start Evann Guessand?
I had a discussion with him and Kasper during the preparation for the match, which was obviously very short. I had asked Evann, yesterday at work, to get into a starting role in relation to what I was going to ask. Kasper had to return for personal reasons. I quickly told Evann that he was going to start the game and that he had to remember what we had worked on. We worked again this morning on the pitch. But he's here. He's a young boy for whom I have high hopes, and for whom I make high demands. He has an interesting profile, with the characteristics of a modern striker. On his first start, against a quality opponent, with a lot of absentees in the attacking areas, especially on the flanks, he was very interesting. But unfortunately he got injured and came off too early in the game. He sprained his ankle and will probably be out on Sunday.

Is there any frustration about the fact that you were leading 1-0 on 22 August?
No. I got rid of it. I didn't want to be in there in the build-up to the game, especially through you media. There are so many things happening in French football today, especially in the stands... We thought that what happened in Nice - the decisions and the sanctions that were taken - would calm everyone in the stands. It wasn't the case, as we saw in some matches. But no, there's no frustration about that. It's the story of a season. We lose a point. We get punished by a point. That's the way it is. You can't dwell on that. We have to work, develop our players and improve our game to be even better.

Is the draw fair in your opinion?
No, that's not what I said. Did Marseille have many situations in the second half?

No, but they had the ball...
Having the ball doesn't mean that you create chances. We had two one-on-one situations and a ball that Hassane unfortunately didn't control, with a very good cross. These are significant goal scoring opportunities. I don't want to say that Marseille were not good, but judging on the goal scoring opportunities, we deserved to win. But the story of a match is always to score goals. And unfortunately, we didn't score any more than our opponent.

Da Cunha is knocking on the door, like others?
Yes, they are there. They have to continue putting in a lot of effort every day. They also have to toughen up through these matches. Marseille is a European team with all that it implies: technical quality, tactical quality, but also athletic quality. There is a lot of intensity, weight and size. Our young players are not used to this kind of encounter, except in our training sessions. That's why I want the training sessions to be very intense, because when they have to go into a match like this, we have to face that challenge too.

Third place after 11 games?
The team can improve. But there are games, like Sunday, where we could have lost and been three points down. We are here, is that flattering or not? Considering what my players do in training and how much they give, I'm happy that they are in this position. But it's only temporary. The league is still long. We still have a lot of room for improvement. It's also by playing these games and facing adversity that we have to improve. We are third after 11 games. It's a good start to the league but we still have a match coming up on Sunday against a tough opponent. At home, the Angevins are very difficult to play against. It's always important to keep the points going up. We've done that in these two games, and not just in any games, against Lyon and Marseille at a neutral ground. It's good but we have to improve our strong points, our ability to control when the opponent pushes. As much as we managed to put Marseille under pressure, Marseille also managed to put us under pressure. And under pressure, we must improve if we want to be more successful in terms of points won.

What did you say to Sampaoli in his ear?
When there's no one there, we talk and we have this ability to make ourselves heard, so everyone talks. Of course, in a match, you never speak in a low voice. There were discussions and exchanges between the Marseille bench and the Nice bench. I simply asked Jorge to keep everyone calm. There could be no problem in the stands, there could be no problem on the bench. It ended well and it's much better that way. We also have a duty to give a very positive image, even if it's not always easy.
