10 days after the end of the 2017-18 season and 70 days before the next campaign begins, OGCNICE.com offers you a chance to dive back, month by month, into the longest season in the Gym’s history.

After July, now we look at the month of August, during which the Aiglons made history by knocking out Ajax, away from home before they were taught a lesson by Napoli and got off to a bad start in the league.

The story

The month started with a masterstroke. And what a masterstroke! On 3 August, the 17/18 squad entered into the club’s history by beating Ajax. Souquet put his side on the right track after 3 minutes. After an incredible start, the Gym was shaken and was deservedly trailing with half an hour to go. And then Mika Seri back heeled, and then Vincent Marcel scored with his right. The Aiglons then held on and their supporters delighted... The capital of the Côte d’Azur would see European football for a ssecond consecutive season.

But it would be in the Europa League, because the Aiglons fell to defeat on two occasions against Napoli (2-0; 2-0) in the play offs of the Champions League, after having still delighted the fans with the iconic sound of the “music”. After Jallet in July, the squad marked the arrivals of Sneijder and Saint-Maximin. Tired, the Azuréens sat in 17th position in L1 at the end of the month, after 3 defeats and one victory.

The Aiglon of the Month

Having just arrived from Monaco, Allan St-Maximin took home the trophy of Aiglon of the Month for August. Arriving with fire in his legs, the number 7 picked 44 % of your votes. He was placed in front of Arnaud Souquet (24%) and Vincent Koziello (23%)

The extra details

During the first win of the season, against Guingamp (2-0), Rémi Walter scored the first goal of his Ligue 1 career. The cameras looked to the former Nancéien, who had forgetten... to take off the label from his shirt! A mistake that was taken with good humor by the midfielder, who declared on BeIN Sports: “It brought me good luck. Now, I will see you all at the club shop.”
