Looking back: It was the last match at the Ray

On Sunday, the Allianz Riviera will play host to a battle for Europe between OGC Nice and Montpellier HSC.

Amongst the 19 battles that have taken place in the top flight, the institution founded in 1904 and the young* Paillade, there is one in particular that remains engraved in the history of the Aiglons.

The 15th visit of the Héraultais, on Sunday 1st September 2013 which coincided with the goodbyes to the Stade du Ray. After an emotional period, the people of Nice made the most of the ground for one final time after 85 years spent together.   

Eysseric in the history books  

Carried by the atmosphere, the 22 players were at the top of their game for this final fixture, ending the game at 2-2. The final scorer for the Niçois at the Ray, Valentin Eysseric (43') followed in the footsteps of Timothée Kolodziejczak (18'). But the final name shown on the board in the  Pop' belongs to a Montpelliérain: Saka Tiéné. Scoring with a free-kick in the 52', the Ivorian grabbed his side's second equaliser of the game, after Souleymane Camara had originally done so (36').

5 years later, the ever present forward (35 years old) is still part of the Montpellier squad, in the same way as defenders Vitorino Hilton and Daniel Congré and goalkeeper, Laurent Pionnier. For the Red and Blacks, only Papy Mendy could say "Li Eri" to his teammates.

*The club founded by Louis Nicollin was born in 1974.
