Interview

Rivere: 'Ignoring the issues would be irresponsible'

How do you feel after this defeat?
We were thrashed and it hurts! Now we have to lift ourselves up again and stick together. We have to take a good look at ourselves in the mirror. I would like to salute the attitude of our supporters. They have every right to be disappointed tonight, but they stood by their side right to the very end. They were exemplary. If only for them, we improved a little in the second half. But it wasn't enough. We need roll up our sleeves and work hard and pick up points everywhere. It's the least our fans deserve, and we are lucky to have them.

Have Nice been resting on their laurels?
No. We can't say that when we have so few points on the board. We are in the relegation play-off positions, thanks to our goal difference. I don't call that resting on your laurels. Quite the opposite. We have nothing to rest on.

What did you think of your players' attitude tonight?
We didn't play like we should have in the first half. We were better in the second half, but it was too late. The match was over at 4-0. When you have so few points on the ladder, when confidence is low… you have a player sent off… everything starts going against you… What's important now are the coming games and we can't let our heads drop.

When teams are struggling, the coach is often in the firing line, like at Lille for instance... Can we expect changes in that department from you?
That won't happen. I don't think that would be the solution for us. We want to get our injured and suspended players back on the pitch. We need to dig deep, play to our strengths and then things will start looking up. Our squad has real potential, but we need to show that out on the playing field.
I am not worried about our spirit. But we don't have any time to lose.

Will you be talking with the players to boost them in the coming days?
What goes on between us, stays between us. The most important thing is that the whole squad sticks together and pulls in the same direction. We have all made mistakes, but those mistakes are collective. Now, as a team, we have to correct them.

Are you worried?
You always have to be on alert. Ignoring the issues would be irresponsible. We need to get back on the right track.
