Nice - Zulte-Waregem

The possible scenarios of a decisive evening

Around 9pm on Thursday evening, OGC Nice could have confirmed their European future. Will they have already qualified for the next round? Or will the Aiglons need to fight again to secure their ticket during the last game of the group stages in the Netherlands? Here are all of the potential scenarios from a decisive evening.

League table

The “lucky” goal scored against the Gym in the dying stages at the Stadio Olimpico sent Lazio into the Round of 32, with the knowledge that they will occupy first place in the group. Behind, OGC Nice maintain the control, but only have a two point lead on Zulte-Waregem, who beat Arnhem during the last round of matches (0-2). At the back of the pack in Group K, Vitesse are no longer the master of their own destiny, but still have a small glimmer of hope of qualifying.

And if the Gym win...

The Aiglons will be guaranteed to continue their journey into 2018, a first in 57 years. In fact, with 9 points on the board, Mario Balotelli and co. wouldn't be able to be caught by the chasing pack.

·       Nice qualify

·       Zulte-Waregem and Vitesse Arnhem eliminated

In case of a draw...

Lucien Favre would need to pick up points in the final match of the group. With 7 points, they would stay second and masters of their own destiny when travelling to the Netherlands, where another draw would ensure their happiness. From Zulte's point of view, they would need to beat Lazio whilst at the same time hoping for a Nice mistake. A mistake that could also benefit Vitesse Arnhem, who would still be in the hat if they win in Italy on Thursday evening.

·       Nice in a favourable position

·       Zulte-Waregem no longer master of their own destiny

·       Vitesse Arnhem still in the running if they win at Lazio.

In case of a Zulte-Waregem win...

The Niçois would lose control, to the benefit of the Belgians. During the last game, the two sides would have a long-distance battle, against 2 sides that would have nothing left to play for. The scenario would be simple for the Aiglons, who would need to do better than the Belgians to be able to get into the direct elimination rounds.

·       Zulte-Waregem in a favourable position

·       Nice no longer master of their destiny

·       Vitesse Arnhem eliminated.
